Not so beautiful… \u00a0Patagonian Toothfish!<\/p>\n

Have you ever heard of Patagonian toothfish? Well, chances are, you\u2019ve eaten it \u2014 only when you ate it, it was called Chilean Seabass.<\/p>\n

Yes, that\u2019s right, Chilean Seabass is just a more \u201cfriendly\u201d name for the Patagonian toothfish. The name under which it\u2019s marketed was changed in 1977 by fisherman Lee Lantz<\/a>\u00a0, to make it sound more appetizing to the American market. Although the fish isn\u2019t always caught in Chilean waters<\/a>, and a toothfish isn\u2019t technically even a bass, the term Chilean Seabass had \u201cbroad resonance among American seafood eaters<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the name change has certainly helped the Patagonian\u00a0toothfish\u00a0become more popular (there was a major Chilean Seabass boom in the \u201890s<\/a>), it has also led to overfishing of the species<\/a>. Without strict government regulation, sustainability hasn\u2019t been a top priority and many fishermen have been fishing in areas where they shouldn\u2019t be. Had this fish not been renamed to make it more marketable, would the demand have been as high and led to overfishing? Probably not.<\/p>\n

It may seem odd that a fish\u2019s name was changed to make it sound better, however it is actually more common than you may think. Monkfish was originally called Goosefish<\/a>, Sea Urchin used to be called Whore\u2019s Eggs<\/a>\u00a0and Orange Roughy was Slimehead<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
